Chinese Religious, Political, and Philosophical Proverbs

Brown University professor Dr. Liwei Jiao, an expert in Chinese proverbs, has recently completed his latest project, Chinese Religious, Political, and Philosophical Proverbs, to provide American Mandarin Society members with a useful study resource and also to “serve as a cultural primer since many of the proverbs in this manual reflect Chinese core values, ancient and contemporary.”
Dr. Liwei Jiao received his PhD in Chinese linguistics from Nankai University in 2003. Before coming to Brown in 2018, he had taught Chinese at Renmin University of China, the University of Durham in England and University of Pennsylvania for twenty years. He frequently teaches Advanced Modern Chinese, Beginning Chinese and Business Chinese. His research interests include Chinese lexicography, Chinese phonetics and the relationship between Chinese language and culture. Among his many publications are Chinese Phonetics in the 20th Century (Shuhai, 2004), 500 Common Chinese Idioms (Routledge, 2010), 500 Common Chinese Proverbs and Colloquial Expressions (Routledge, 2013), A Thematic Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese (Routledge, 2019), and Cultural Dictionary of the Chinese Language (Routledge, Dec. 2, 2019): “a must-have reference for anyone seeking to understand the sources of Chinese behavior” – Chas W. Freeman, Jr.

The American Mandarin Society supports U.S. professionals with Chinese language skills, helping them maintain fluency, deepen knowledge, and build networks to strengthen U.S.-Asia ties for future prosperity.
