Meaning: to only think of oneself

Background: Celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Chinese People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Xi Jinping emphasized the importance of win-win relationships in China’s foreign policy goals.

Usage: 独善其身 can be used in both formal and casual settings. It can be used in the affirmative to state that someone is selfish, or negated to reject the idea.
