休戚与共 | xiū qī yǔ gòng

Meaning: to stand together through thick and thin

Background: On July 4, 2024, Xi Jinping attended the 24th meeting of the Council of the Heads of State of the members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) during a state visit to Kazakhstan at the invitation of President Kassymzhomart Tokayev. The two leaders gave a joint-statement on the direction of China-Kazakh relations. This is a wide-ranging statement that is well worth reading in order to better understand China’s strategy in Central Asia.

Usage: 休戚与共 describes close relationships that last through times of hardship. It is similar to the English phrase, “through good times and bad times,” although it is more formal.
